This is one of only 3 known photographs of the Astrolabe Needle, a 300ft tall black obelisk located in Dallmann Bay, Antarctica. For hundreds of years, Antarctic explorers have marveled at the Needle's eerie ability to suck up all surrounding light, creating what appears to be a black void in the middle of the ocean. To this day, no one knows what the Astrolabe Needle is comprised of. "Specially protected" by international law, only a handful of scientists are granted entry to Dallmann Bay each year.
